Last weekends mix highlighted one of 2011′s biggest producers, the russian, Arty. As we are sure you are all well aware by now Steve Aoki and Datsik have started the epic Deadmeat bus tour. We got the chance to see them in Denver, an early stop on a tour that continues into March. The tour is in celebration of Steve’s first artist album Wonderland and Datsik’s up coming album on the DIM MAK label. Along with Steve Aoki and Datsik the tour features many artist from the DIM MAK family at different stops. In Denver it was rising talent Alvin Risk!
First breaking waves in a big way around the EDM scene with his killer remix of Ali Love’s Diminishing Returns, Alvin Risk quickly drew attention and suport from Steve Aoki and many other artist including Skrillex. Although it is still pretty early in his career we can tell Alvin Risk is going to grow quickly and bring a refreshing style to dubstep, electro, and anything else he puts his efforts into. Alvin put on a great opening set showcasing what he has to offer for any time you see him this year. Although it was shorter then we would have liked his set was very impressive, and he capped it of with Diminishing Returns of course. Yet an aspect we weren’t expecting was Alvin Risk transitioning into the song by singing the chorus himself a few time over as the crowd joined in. Another key point of the Deadmeat tour is a strong visual set up for each artist. For Alvin Risk it was a simple yet entertaining rear projector screen with a very minimal set up infront of it that actually made Alvin, possible EDM’s best dressed artist, completely visable to the crowd.
After Alvin finished the song and thanked the crowd the Fillmore Stage crew quickly took down the projector set up and rolled in Datsik’s custom stage. A metal stage that has the Datsik name in lights across the front, also sticking out about a foot and a half from the top is a camera pointed at Datsik. At times this would capture Datsik’s movements and display them on the visual screen that hung behind him. We have seen other stage’s and set up that capture the movements of the artist but none like this that showed his exact shape right down to the bill of his hat. We were also happy to see this feature functioned with no flaws or distortion in time.
Datsik has played in Denver countless times and he always puts down an amazing set for one of his favorite cities in the world. This set packed with tons of new material was far more then even we expected, and left us extremely excited for Datsik’s up coming album and releases. Datsik revealed a new remix he did for Kaskade and Skrillex’s song Lick It that had us instantly impressed, not only because its a strong remix but its pretty different from most of his past material. We hope this is something that will also come through on his album, Datsik is incredibly talented and we can’t wait to see how he changes things up. Yet we are just impressed with how he is progressing the sounds and styles he is well known for. His first single from the album is Fully Blown featuring lyrics from Snak The Ripper is a perfect example of this and easily already one of our favorite Datsik songs. These new songs along with Datsik Classics such as Texx Mars, Firepower, and King Kong made for one the most engaging dubstep sets we have seen.

After Datsik closed out his encore and the crowd chanted his name in gratitude the attention in the room shifted to the giant black tarps covering Steve Aoki’s custom stage. The crew once again moved quickly removing Datsik’s set up and pulling forward the platform that sits in the middle of Steve’s huge light set up that spells out AOKI. This is the same Aoki stage that he used this summer on the Identity Festival Tour yet with plenty of upgrades. For starters the platform in the center has a much more intricate lighting design to complement the letters and a back drop that includes all sorts of lights as well as video screens was added.
The house lights dimmed, the crowd started chanting Aoki, and Steve climbed up into his both. Although before he got started he stood on the front of the platform and had the lights turn on to light up the crowd. He then turned around held out his cell phone a took a picture saying that he had to tweet that. Then he jumped down and the craziness commenced. If there’s one thing anyone going to a Steve Aoki show should know it would that you can expect it to be one of the messiest out of control experiences ever. For as long as we can remember Steve has been showering his crowds in bottles of champagne, but in the past year he has added orange and cranberry juice, as well as smashing a cake into the face of one very lucky front row fan. He has always been a big fan of crowd surfing, but he has taken that so far to the next level. Placing people on inflatable rafts and mattresses, even snowboarders Danny Kass and Dingo jumped into the crowd with Steve Aoki.
Steve has just released his Wonderland album and when he started his set he promised it would be 100% his music. Not only did he keep this promise by playing almost the entire Wonderland album but he played almost all of his classics and collaborations from over the years. Early in his set he played Warp 1.9 which always sets the tone for a great night from Steve as the crowd screams “one, two, woop! woop!” It seemed like every song Steve played was a hit including all the new material from Wonderland, the crowd knew all the words and reacted strongly to every song. We personal loved when Aoki played his remix of Pursuit of Happiness, and summer hit No Beef. Yet the obvious highlights of the nights came with Earthquakey People, Ladi Dadi, and Cudi the Kid which was his final song.
Go see this show! It will be one of the best tours this year and is extremely fun and musically pleasing. For everything about the tour including buying your tickets go to the Deadmeat Tour website. So I know that this is a little old but I felt the need to share it to those that might not have been there in person or have not heard this set yet. The reason for me wanting to share it with everyone else is because I personally believe that Cazzette does not receive the notoriety they deserve. Comprised of two Swedish DJs, these two are more recognized for their remixes of popular songs such as Avicii’s “Levels”. But when you guys listen to this set, I’m pretty sure a lot of your opinions will be changed about this duo. This whole set has massive drops, smooth track integration, and unique flow. One of the things I love the most about this set is the incorporation of older electronic sounds from Fatboy Slim and Daft Punk along with the inclusion of hip hop including a remix of the classic NWA song “Straight Outta Compton”. This is easily one of the best sets I’ve heard in a long time so I encourage everyone to give it a listen. Let me know what you guys think! Like them on Facebook here !

This past Friday I got the chance to witness history by going to see the first ever electronic dance music act play Madison Square Garden. This also happened to be my first time seeing Swedish House Mafia live. Swedish House Mafia played an absolutely incredible set. Opening with Together, many though it would go into Alesso’s “Nillionaire” (which is what they were opening with all summer at festivals like EDC and T in the park), they instead went into an ID track which many think will be their next big single. The place exploded and the energy only went up from there. Then came Michael Calfan’s Ressurection, and a brand new explosive track by Nari & Milani entitled “Atom.” One big surprise of their set, is that SHM played not one but two Afrojack songs – Lunar and Replica, both of which sent the crowed into a frenzy. I would have to say the most incredible part of their set was the last 20 minutes – Pressure, Every Teardrop (SHM Remix), Save The World, Sweet Disposition, Teenage Crime, Leave The World Behind, Flash, and surprisingly closing out with their Be/I Found You/Knas bootleg. Yes, all those songs in a row. You can only imagine how the place must of exploded. Other highlights of their set included Tommy Trash’s remix of Dahlback’s One Last Ride, Coming Home mixed with Daft Punk’s Aerodynamic (because they could not possibly play MSG without playing at least one daft punk record), One mixed with Florence and the Machine’s You Got The Love, and a brand new upcoming release on Axtone entitled In My Mind, which is what many people are saying is the track that stole the set.
If an idea like this was raised two years ago it would have been laughed at. EDM hitting America is officially the biggest thing since the introduction of Rock N Roll. Because of this event Swedish House Mafia will be looked at as pioneers for many years to come. I expect many EDM artists to start playing venues like MSG, and it will become a regular occurrence. There are few words to describe how incredible their set at MSG was, and how amazing the vibe was around the place. Like Steve Angello said, they turned Madison Square Garden into a nightclub. This event has changed electronic dance music.

This past weekend Above & Beyond celebrated the 400th episode of Trance Around The World. This marks 8 years of the radio show and podcast provided weekly by the powerful trio. This has easily been one of Above & Beyond’s most successful years with the release of Group Therapy, touring continuously around the world, Group Therapy stages at festivals, and artists from all across their label having enormous success as well. The list continues but this night was focused more than anything on their fans that connect with them weekly through TATW. The show happened in Beirut Lebanon and broadcast live over websites and radio such as Electric Area on XM. Joining Tony, Jono, and Paavo for the event were Jaytech, Kyau & Albert, Gareth Emery, and Mat Zo. All of the sets are great!
