This week, Boulder duo Big Gigantic started their Nocturnal Tour at the Belly Up in Aspen. This tour celebrates the release of their newest album also titled Nocturnal, which is available free on their website. The Aspen show was the first of four stops in Colorado, all of which sold out. Big Gigantic has also recently added a custom stage for this tour, although due to the smaller size of Belly Up they did not have it for this show. Regardless they brought some extra lighting to add to the Belly Up’s already very impressive set up. Openers included Fisk, half of duo FRESH2DEATH, and GRiZ a young gun out of Detroit. Fisk got things started quick as the venue filled up even faster. The self proclaimed Tree Thugger is a key member of the Mile High Sound Movement.

After Fisk we got our first look at 21 year old GRiZ, and to say we were impressed would be an understatement. GRiZ’s set kept us well entertained from start to finish and only wanting more by the end. The set was high energy yet had a great mix of slower breaks between the intensity. Watching his hands move incredibly fast over his midi was captivating as he displayed a skill that many artists just do not have. GRiZ has a great presence on stage, one that reminded us a lot of the first time we saw Paper Diamond perform, and with so many strong original productions and remixes we think GRiZ is going to grow fast this year. Artists as diverse as this never fit in to a single genre, which is something we value very much. We asked GRiZ how he would best describe himself:
“As an artist I have yet to truly define myself within the scope of what other people tend to do or in any other way for that matter. I am in love with music. I am in love with creating it and that is where I stand. My sound is eclectic and diverse. I am doing lots of varies styles at the moment. I love bass and music that makes you dance. But other than that, I’m all over the place. I would say though, that either electro-soul or electro-funk have my heart when is comes to music. It just hits me in the right place ya know?”

Big Gigantic would be one of the first names we would recommend to anyone looking for a more diverse and different type of EDM. With live drums and saxophone there is truly nothing like a Big Gigantic show. Their electronic sounds shine in their remixes but Big Gigantic’s original work is truly one of a kind. Live, they also give their own flare to songs such as Louder (Doctor P & Flux Pavilion Remix) and Cascade (Cutline Remix), the use of their drums and sax make these songs sound amazing and add a new level of energy. With Big Gigantic’s newest album Nocturnal just released, this set was almost completely new from the last time we saw them just a few months ago. Notable highlights came as they played Eyes Closed and their classic remix of Aloe Blacc’s I Need A Dollar.
